A group of dedicated students from The Heritage School in East Harlem attended their first-ever conference with the Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR). These students are part of the Youth Advisory Council, a multi-year initiative in partnership with the Columbia Center for Injury Science and Prevention.
This milestone event took place at the New York Academy of Medicine—an especially meaningful location, as it hosted the students’ first Youth Advisory Council summit and their engagement with the Non-Violence Project USA. Under the leadership of Dr. Danielle Laraque-Arena and David Kener, these young leaders gained invaluable experience in injury prevention research and advocacy. Their participation in the SAVIR conference marked an exciting step forward in their journey toward making a meaningful impact in their community.
