Community School Directors, Program Directors, and staff from across Counseling In Schools came together for their monthly cross-program meeting, with a strong focus on attendance initiatives and student engagement efforts across our partner schools. These meetings provide an important opportunity for teams working in different school communities to collaborate, reflect on emerging needs, and align strategies that help students remain connected to school and supported throughout the year.

During the session, staff explored the many factors that can impact attendance, including mental health challenges, family stressors, transportation barriers, chronic absenteeism, and students’ sense of belonging within their school communities. Teams shared real examples from their schools and discussed how relationship-centered approaches, proactive outreach, and coordinated support systems can help re-engage students who may be struggling to attend consistently.

The group also exchanged best practices for strengthening participation in school-based programs and creating welcoming environments where students feel safe, seen, and motivated to engage. Conversations highlighted the importance of collaboration among school staff, counselors, families, and community partners in addressing attendance challenges early and holistically.

By coming together to share insights, problem-solve collectively, and strengthen alignment across programs, CIS continues to deepen its commitment to supporting the whole child. Through consistent collaboration and student-centered practices, CIS helps ensure that young people remain connected to their learning communities and have the academic, emotional, and social support they need to thrive.
