Members of Counseling In Schools’ Students in Temporary Housing (STH) Facilitator Team—Kelly Hernandez-Arriaga, Cynthia Moore, Jade Elias, Margot Otavalo, and Jenny Hernandez—joined the New York City Department of Education’s Office of Community Supports and Wellness at a special family engagement event held at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.
The event, led by STH Regional Director of Support Charlene Mitchell, welcomed more than 200 parents and children living in temporary housing from across New York City’s five boroughs. Throughout the day, families participated in activities designed to promote social-emotional learning, strengthen school connectedness, and enhance parent-child communication.
CIS facilitators engaged children and caregivers in interactive activities that fostered meaningful connections, encouraged self-expression, and reinforced the importance of supportive relationships both at home and in school. The event provided families with an opportunity to learn, play, and build community in a welcoming and engaging environment.
