Michael Cololt-Torres, newly hired Assistant Program Director, had the wonderful opportunity to be part of the six-week Summer Rising program at JHS 233 Montauk this summer. He reflected that though the program was brief, it was packed with opportunities for students to learn, explore, build connections, and create lasting memories both inside and beyond the classroom.
Field trips were among the highlights of the summer. Twice each week, students ventured out to explore New York City and try new experiences—from a water-splashing day at the local playground to visits to the New York Aquarium, New York Hall of Science, and One World Observatory. Students also took on new adventures at RiseNY, iFLY, Ferox Ninja Park, and through kayaking. One particularly meaningful experience was a visit to City Tech through the CUNY Explorers program, where students had the opportunity to experience a college campus firsthand and begin imagining the many possibilities that higher education can offer.
Every Tuesday brought another opportunity for students to come together through Quest Challenges, weekly friendly competitions between classes in the same grade. With activities ranging from sports and relays to trivia and team-building challenges, students practiced communication, leadership, teamwork, and supporting one another. The SYEP participants and program staff joined in the excitement, cheering students on, celebrating both victories and genuine effort—and occasionally jumping into the challenges themselves!
The final day of Summer Rising brought a particularly meaningful moment. As students said goodbye and prepared to part ways, Michael reminded them that the world is a small place and that their paths will likely cross again. After six weeks filled with discovery, laughter, teamwork, and new experiences, the students left with more than just memories—they left with new connections, new possibilities, and a summer they could call their own.
